Capstone (detail)
Capstone gives us a closeup view of the growth of very tiny crystals in the heart of a coral-like fossil. The crystals near the top have grown into a water-filled space, and thus were free to form the beautifully smooth facets we see here. The crystals below, with the same composition, were confined by their neighbors and grew in an irregular, but still attractive, pattern.

The field of view across the image is about 30 micrometers, or 0.03 mm, so a 12" x 12" print would have a magnification of about 10,000 times.

We have given this image a subtle blue tint, selected to accentuate its crystalline nature.
