Serendipity can play an important role in art. The original image here was of the inner growth surface of a modern coral, and while attractive, was not exceptional. Because the crystals on the surface were nicely aligned, we wondered whether we could produce a cross-like effect by reflecting the image, horizontally and vertically. To our delight, and we hope yours, we discovered an entire series of Golden Faces along the fold lines! One of these is shown in the detail, but we’ll let your imagination bring out the rest.
The field of view across the entire image is about 90 micrometers, or 0.09mm, so the magnification in a 20” x 20” print is about 5500 times.
