Nature makes us smile now and then, so when a pinch of beach sand spilled out this smiling fellow, we decided to pass him along to the public. We were tempted to accentuate the eye shadows, but thought we’d leave room for the viewer’s imagination. But a passing resemblance to a holiday symbol is only part of the story behind our Jack O’Lantern. The real challenge to the viewer is to consider how a single living cell could construct this miniature mansion!
The field of view in this image is about 450 micrometers, or 0.45mm, so a 16” x 16” print would have a magnification of about 900 times.
We could not resist using a pumpkin tint on the subject, and a neutral blue-gray on the background.
