Orb (detail)

Orb is one of our favorite images, perhaps because it reminds us of the fantastic images of Jupiter and its moons sent back by our space probes.  Here we can easily imagine a tiny moon orbiting a distant planet, both moon and planet covered in drifts of frozen methane, whipped by the winds of nitrogen atmospheres.  Or we can see what is really there, a tiny orbicule, mysterious byproduct of pollen formation, resting upon a grain of apple pollen that entirely dwarfs it.  Either way, we have a thing of real beauty amid an aura of mystery, and an image that can be displayed either horizontally or vertically.

This is the most highly magnified image in the summer 2006 collection.  The orb is only 3.28 micrometers (0.00328mm) in diameter, so a 16” x 24” print is magnified over 70,000 times.  (We don’t recommend prints larger than that, as the image would be fuzzy when examined from short distances.)

We elected to use a gradient of blues to convey an impression of an icy landscape.

Orb is available in the following sizes and series:
